CMA Plumbing owner arriving to replace a main water line

The line every fixture depends on

Your main water line runs underground from the meter to the house. Older lines made of galvanized steel, polybutylene or thin plastic can crack, corrode or be damaged by roots, settling and construction.

We replace the line from the meter connection to the house, add or replace the main shut-off valve, and check your water pressure. Where pressure is too high, we recommend a pressure-reducing valve to protect the plumbing inside.

Signs of a main line problem

Low pressure everywhere

Every faucet and shower is weak, not just one.

Wet or green spot in the yard

A patch that stays soggy or greener than the rest, between the meter and the house.

Meter moving with water off

A classic sign of a leak, often in the main line.

Old pipe at the meter

Galvanized or gray poly pipe at the meter box is usually original and aging.

How a main line replacement works

  1. Locate & confirm

We test the line and confirm where the problem is.

  2. Utility locates

Underground utilities are marked before any digging.

  3. Replace & connect

New line installed from the meter connection to the house, with a new main shut-off.

  4. Test & restore

Pressure-tested, then the trench is backfilled and the area cleaned up.

Main Water Line FAQ

Who is responsible for the main water line?

In most areas the utility owns the meter and the line to it, and the homeowner owns the line from the meter to the house. We work on the homeowner side.

How long does a main line replacement take?

Many are completed in a day, depending on length, depth and what’s in the way, such as driveways and landscaping.

Do I need a pressure-reducing valve?

If your water pressure is high, yes. It protects your fixtures, water heater and pipes. We test it as part of the job.

Is the main line on a well different?

On a well, the line runs from the well and pressure tank instead of a meter. We repair and replace those lines too.
